Sketchbook Research

The Old Operating Theatre

I drew the inside of the operation theatre, and I add some personal emotion when I was colouring with watercolour.

The sketches and notes I took in museum

The first I was planning to choose the 19th century surgery as the topic, then I went to the medicine gallery of science museum and the old operating theatre museum in London, and I drew some stuffs such as the herbs, the medicine bottles, the equipment in the past, etc. from the museums with watercolour even though some skills I could not handle them. Moreover, I would like to add some different materials on the sketchbook beside the paper with images. I attached some lavenders I saw in the museum and some pills I had on the sketchbook.

The contrast

However, I would like to make the contrast of the past and present to show the dangerous when human explore the medicine realm and how some treatments came into being. Therefore, I did some research of the modern medicine in the internet. After I brainstormed about the connection of medicine such as the operation, the equipment, the drugs, etc. I did the collages of it.

External Researches

However, because of the topic, I would like to make the silhouettes based on the 19th century surgery, so I did some research on the 19th century mainly about the nurse maids, and drew some costumes of them with ink and gel pens, which is the new tools I would like to try. Moreover, I read the nine strict rules of nurses and the story of Florence Nightingale, and I am quite interested in the kerosene lamp. I think the light of kerosene lamp could be the symbol of the development of the medicine, especially in 19th century. Therefore, I drew the lamp with charcoal and watercolour.

After I did the research of it I was going to do the silhouettes based on the nurse maids’ costumes. Therefore, I would like to try to create the silhouettes have some related shapes such as lamb sleeves, aprons and the hats, and make some modern variants related to those traditional shapes.
