Evaluation

When I came on this course to started study for womenswear, especially the process of making clothes and how to design.

One of my dreams to create the clothes on my own will. I hope to create my own design and garments without the others restrict, and I do not want to live for others. I hope to get into the BA courses for further education and get closer to the fashion industry and make the whole garments from beginning to the end on my own

There are plenty of things that I had improved thought out this course. First, I could make the research pages much better than before with external materials not only the drawing. Second, I can handle more software though the Adobe classes. Before that, I could only use Photoshop in Adobe software and now I can use Illustrator, InDesign, Premier fluently. Third, I have made the progress on draping and silhouette. I can make the much more interesting and unique silhouette only with calicos and papers. I think such an achievement can be a good start for the BA courses.

In term 3, I made a project about the 19th Century Surgery, which is going to talk about the darkness and blood when human was exploring the medicine. The process of the project is to do the research, draping, make the developments in both 2D and 3D, redesign the developments and do the final illustrations. I used my skill of making collages, draping, redesign from my silhouettes and drawing skills. To be honest I am doubt on whether I am prepared. I think I am quite prepared but not fully. Even though in London I have developed the skills whatever in research, silhouette, design, drawing and some technique handmade like crochet. However, I still feels like I need more improvement and there are still some skills I was not fully handle in IISF courses such as presentation and analysing.

If I will do the project again, I will not change my topic. However, in the research pages I will make the topic clearer. The topic now would be quite vague because of the modern medicine part has taken for 40 percent of it. I think they should be only for 25 percent. Moreover, I will put more relative materials into the pages, the lavenders and the pills are quite simple I think.
In the 2D&3D development part, I would like to create more draping with more materials. I still think that the draping I did had reached the progress but did not reach my expect. In design part, some of the designs are quite boring for me and some of them are very similar and common. In illustration part, even though I painted the illustrations more free and clear compare with I did before, I still think the models can be more active

I am not so satisfied with my term 3 portfolio.

To be honest, I am not so satisfied with my achievement since October. I am not so good at time management so sometimes when I want to pursue the better result, I prefer to do the things again and again. Therefore, the time will be not enough for me. Moreover, I still need to improve my skills to create draping not only because other students are adept on it, but also because that is a very important skill, I need to handle it in the future. In fact, there is a biggest problem is that I am still quite nervous and afraid to give presentation in front of the class. Overall, even though I had developed some skills like drawing in the course, there are some problems I need to improve.

Colour Palette and Textile

First Version of Colour Palettes

At first, I made the colour palette only with 19th century research pages or modern pages. However, I did not think that could tell the story.

Second Version

I decided to choose the first page in my portfolio which could represent my story. However, both tutor and classmates thought that the red and emerald were quite contrast and broke the harmony of the palette.

Final choice and the textile

Finally, I changed the colour with lower saturation and based on the colour palette I went to the fabric stores to look for the textiles.

Adobe Session

In Adobe Sessions I had learnt a lot of knowledge in different software.

SketchUp

The first lesson I learnt how to use SketchUp to build models. Unlike the other modelling software such as Blender and Maya, SketchUp requires lower and even could build models online, which is more easier and sufficient for fashion students to make a virtual store decorations.

The second session I tried to make a short video with Adobe Premier. I had learnt some basic clipping skills to clip the video easily and even studied how to use the filter. However, That was a pity that the internet could not connect so I had to use the original material in teacher’s disk.

CAD Drawing For Colour testing

The third session was a session to look back what I had learnt in Adobe Illustration in term 2. I tried to CAD Drawing again and that was much better than before, even though that was still not so fluently. Moreover, I developed a skill for image tracing more quickly, but unfortunately that was not work well on fashion drawing.

Adobe Illustration 3D models

The last session I learnt how to build easy 3D models of coffee cup and doughnuts with a picture on them in Adobe Illustration, and I put a anime picture on them. After that, I had a presentation about my work. However, I was too afraid to show the work, and I hope I could be better in the future.

The 2D&3D Development

To be honest in the 2D&3D classes started I was still improving my research pages on the nurse maids in nineteen century. Therefore I first tried to use the drawing and pictures in my researchI found lots of photos about the nurse maids at that time and created the 3D silhouettes in class. In fact, the nurses remained the traditional impressions as I had met before such as the lamb sleeves and aprons. Therefore, when I was creating the silhouettes, I tried to make the outline more closer to those typical characteristics, and my personal aesthetics and understanding to make the folds with calicos and papers.

Nurse Maid

when I was creating draping, I tried to find the differences between the working suit for nurses in different hospitals. Moreover, some details in those nurses portrait photos could also give me the inspiration on creating draping.

Some Draping

When I was creating the 2D development, I tried to combine my researches with the draping as I did in IFS classes. However, I did not only create only the tops as before, after I looked others 2D developments I thought I need to be more courageous on developing.

2D Development

After the developments, I redesigned them, at first I redesigned the whole silhouettes, but they were not so contemporary. Therefore, I took some interesting and unique part to design as garments. Because of so much folds I made, I realised that when the 3D works returned to 2D and the combination of lines, they would recomposed into the new details such as the pockets.

After I did some redesigns, I chose some of my favourite design and made them into illustrations.

Final Illustrations

There are the final illustrations I made. The layers and the structures will be more clear compare with the final illustration in IFS submission which use line to draw the shadow. Moreover, compared with the fashion illustration in term 1, I drew the outline with colour ink for the second time and the accomplishment would be higher.

Sketchbook Research

The Old Operating Theatre

I drew the inside of the operation theatre, and I add some personal emotion when I was colouring with watercolour.

The sketches and notes I took in museum

The first I was planning to choose the 19th century surgery as the topic, then I went to the medicine gallery of science museum and the old operating theatre museum in London, and I drew some stuffs such as the herbs, the medicine bottles, the equipment in the past, etc. from the museums with watercolour even though some skills I could not handle them. Moreover, I would like to add some different materials on the sketchbook beside the paper with images. I attached some lavenders I saw in the museum and some pills I had on the sketchbook.

The contrast

However, I would like to make the contrast of the past and present to show the dangerous when human explore the medicine realm and how some treatments came into being. Therefore, I did some research of the modern medicine in the internet. After I brainstormed about the connection of medicine such as the operation, the equipment, the drugs, etc. I did the collages of it.

External Researches

However, because of the topic, I would like to make the silhouettes based on the 19th century surgery, so I did some research on the 19th century mainly about the nurse maids, and drew some costumes of them with ink and gel pens, which is the new tools I would like to try. Moreover, I read the nine strict rules of nurses and the story of Florence Nightingale, and I am quite interested in the kerosene lamp. I think the light of kerosene lamp could be the symbol of the development of the medicine, especially in 19th century. Therefore, I drew the lamp with charcoal and watercolour.

After I did the research of it I was going to do the silhouettes based on the nurse maids’ costumes. Therefore, I would like to try to create the silhouettes have some related shapes such as lamb sleeves, aprons and the hats, and make some modern variants related to those traditional shapes.

Initial Ideas

Behind the Beauty

The first idea I could came up with is about the beauty behind in the past Europe, which was inspired by the video I watched about the disease in the middle ages. To be more specific, the video introduced the tuberculosis, which was a lethal disease at that time. However, the disease was quite popular at that time because the symptom appearance was related to the aesthetic at that time. Therefore, even though the women looked beauty at that time, the appearances behind were significantly disgusting.

The 19th Century Surgery

The second idea I could conceive was about the development of medicine. I recalled the documentary called ‘Two Hundred Years of Surgery’, which talks about how human develop the medicine, and save lives from nature. However, the process of development is full of darkness and blood. Therefore, I would like to make the content about how the past people explore the unknown of medicine.

The Aposematism

The third idea I recalled is about the aposematism. I got the idea from the news which was about a woman who was almost going to eat the blue ringed octopus, which is poisonous. Then I made the connection between the some creatures which have vivid colour, which are quite pretty, but they might be poisonous. Moreover, because of it, the predators would be warned by the colour. Therefore, I could make the content about the dangerous behind the beautiful and colourful things.

Therefore, in all three ideas I could think about I would like to choose the second one for my project, after considered about the property and the advantages of the situation.

Proposal

The Surgery of 19th Century till Now

This topic came from the documentary that I watched before called Two Hundred Years of Surgery. The documentary mainly talked about the darkness and bloody process during the development of the medicine which shocked me a lot. In my project I would like to show how the modern medicine developed and lead to the aim of the project: how people confront the nature and death.

200 years of surgery

The first I would like to do the research both online and in the reality. First, it is important to review the documentary. With the combination of my situation, I chose the 19th century as the mainly part for the project. Then I decided to go to the science museum and the old operating theatre museum in London and draw the interesting objects with the sketches. The medicine gallery in science museum combined the modern medicine with the past surgery together and the old operating theatre museum could help me to develop more into the object.

Science Museum- Medicine Gallery
The Old Operating Theatre

In the BA courses I would like to go into the Pattern Cutting in Womenswear, so in this project I am going to focus more on the silhouette and design part. Despite the project I did in term 2, in the silhouette part I would like to use more calicos with different weight. To be more specific, I tried to get close to the feeling of the flow of different calicos and develop the calicos in different shapes on mannequin. In the design part, in the illustrations I would like to make them more conceptual in my design and more exaggerated in the performance after I got a positive reflection on a specific design, I made in term 2. Moreover, in the drawing part, besides watercolour, I would like to use different ways and material such as the colour pencil and ink.

The outcome of the projects I am going to arrange my stuffs more logically unlike I did in term 2. In these slides I am going to put more slides for the process of silhouette and design to show my ability in Pattern Cutting. Moreover, after the end of term 2, I realised that the text should be the assist function of my project, so I shall reduce the text in the slides instead of my research.
